26 ft box truck dimensions

By Gustavo · Updated October 2026

When a broker asks "how many pallets?" or "can you take a 9 ft crate?", the answers come from the box's inside dimensions, not the badge on the door. Here are the numbers that decide which loads fit a 26 ft box truck, with a source and a date.

Pallet math

Standard pallets measure 48 by 40 in. Two across, with the 40 in side facing the width, take 80 in of an 8 ft 1 in (97 in) interior, leaving room for straps and load bars. Six rows of 48 in use 24 ft, so 12 pallets fit with a little room at the door. Turn the pallets so the 48 in side faces across, and two take 96 in, which only works in a box that's at least that wide inside all the way back, but seven 40 in rows then fit for 14. E-track, wheel wells and door frames can block the turned layout, so measure your own box before you promise 14.

Height and stacking

With up to 8 ft 7 in of inside height, two pallets of moderate height can stack if the freight allows it. Many shippers don't allow stacking, and top-heavy stacks shift in turns. Ask before you plan on it.

Doors, ramps and liftgates

Roll-up rear doors take some height at the opening; check the clear opening, not just the box height, for tall crates. A liftgate makes deliveries possible without a dock but adds weight, and its capacity, often up to about 3,000 lb, limits the heaviest single piece you can lift. The trade-offs are in liftgate vs dock-high box truck.

What the numbers mean for loads and pay

Space and weight decide together. A load of 12 pallets at 700 lb each is 8,400 lb, which fits. A load of 12 pallets at 900 lb each is 10,800 lb, which is over most 26 ft trucks' payload, even though the floor has room. Light, bulky freight like furniture fills the box long before it reaches the weight limit. The full weight picture is in 26 ft box truck weight capacity, and you can check your own numbers with the max payload calculator.

Brokers post box truck loads by pallet count, weight and sometimes dimensions. Knowing your exact interior lets you answer in one breath and win loads others hesitate on. Load types are covered in box truck loads.

Loading the space well

Load heavy pallets first and toward the front, over or ahead of the rear axle, so the truck's axles share the weight. Keep the load tight to the walls and use load bars or straps on E-track so nothing slides when you brake. Leave the last row easy to reach if you have more than one stop. On multi-stop routes, load in reverse delivery order so the first drop comes off first without shuffling the rest.

Odd shapes and long items

Not everything comes on a pallet. Long items like pipe, rolls of flooring or doors need the full interior length; furniture and appliances need care with height and padding. Ask for exact dimensions of anything over 8 ft long or taller than 6 ft, check them against the door opening as well as the box, and confirm how it will be loaded and unloaded. A 9 ft crate that fits inside but not through the door is a wasted trip.

Why we only dispatch 26 ft and longer

A 26 ft box handles the full pallet loads brokers post for straight trucks. Shorter boxes compete with vans for small, low-paying local work, and we can't book enough freight for them to be worth the owner's time. We dispatch box trucks of 26 ft or longer only. Starting out? Measuring your own truck

Measure inside length at the floor from the front wall to the door, width between the walls and at the wheel wells, height at the front and at the door frame, and floor height from the ground. Note the liftgate capacity from its plate. Keep these numbers in your phone; brokers ask for them.

Dispatch for 26 ft box trucks

With box truck dispatch, we match loads to your box's dimensions and payload, negotiate the rate and plan the reload. You approve every load before it's booked, and the broker sends the rate confirmation straight to you.

Questions people ask

Q01How many pallets fit in a 26 ft box truck?

Usually 12 standard 48 by 40 in pallets, two across and six deep. If the interior is wide enough to fit two pallets turned 48 in across, seven rows can fit for up to 14. Weight often runs out before floor space.

Q02How tall is a 26 ft box truck?

Inside, up to about 8 ft 7 in on common rental-spec trucks. Exterior height depends on the chassis and body, so measure yours and post the number in the cab before you meet a low bridge or drive-through.

Q03What is the interior volume of a 26 ft box truck?

Up to about 1,700 cubic feet on common builds. Light, bulky freight like furniture and packaging can fill that space well under the weight limit.

Q04How wide is a 26 ft box truck inside?

Up to about 8 ft 1 in on common rental-spec trucks, which allows two standard pallets side by side. Wheel wells and E-track can reduce usable width in places.

Q05Can a 26 ft box truck use a loading dock?

Usually, yes. With a floor around 46 to 50 in high, a 26 ft box lines up with many standard docks, though some docks are built for taller semi trailers and need a dock plate or leveler. Ask the shipper if you're unsure.

Q06Is the 26 ft measured inside or outside?

It's the nominal box length. Interior length is usually just under 26 ft. The whole truck, cab included, is considerably longer; measure it for parking and length limits.
