26 ft box truck weight capacity
By Gustavo · Updated October 2026
Floor space sells a box truck, but weight decides most of its loads. A 26 ft box can fit 12 pallets of heavy freight that it can't legally carry. Knowing your exact payload is the first number a dispatcher needs and the one that keeps you out of trouble at a scale.
The numbers
| Figure | Typical value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| GVWR | Up to 26,000 lb | Door jamb label |
| Payload | Up to about 10,000 lb | GVWR minus empty weight |
| Liftgate capacity | Up to about 3,000 lb | Liftgate plate |
| CDL line (single truck) | 26,001 lb GVWR = Class B | 49 CFR 383.91 |

How to find your payload
- Read the GVWR on the door jamb label.
- Weigh the truck empty on a certified scale, with a full tank, you in the cab and your usual gear (straps, pallet jack, blankets).
- Subtract. GVWR minus that weight is your payload.
- Check axle ratings on the same label; heavy freight at the back can overload the rear axle even under GVWR.
Check the math with the max payload calculator.
Worked example
EXAMPLE
- GVWR
- 26,000 lb
- Empty with fuel, driver, gear
- 16,300 lb
- Payload
- 9,700 lb
- 12 pallets x 750 lb
- 9,000 lb, fits
- 12 pallets x 900 lb
- 10,800 lb, over
This EXAMPLE truck fills every pallet position only when pallets average about 800 lb or less. Heavier freight means fewer pallets, and a broker who posts "12 pallets, 11,000 lb" has a load this truck can't take, however much floor space is left.
A common non-CDL 26 ft box truck is rated up to 26,000 lb GVWR with up to about 10,000 lb of payload; at 26,001 lb GVWR it needs a Class B CDL.

- Liftgate: often several hundred pounds or more.
- Heavier body or reefer unit: insulated and refrigerated boxes weigh more.
- Fuel: a full tank is heavier than a near-empty one.
- Gear: pallet jack, dollies, straps, blankets and load bars.
- Second person: a helper counts too.
The CDL line for box trucks
A box truck is a single vehicle, so the line is its own GVWR: 26,001 lb or more needs a Class B CDL. Many 26 ft trucks are built at 26,000 lb or just under to stay below it. If you tow a trailer rated over 10,000 lb behind a box truck and the combination reaches 26,001 lb, that's a Class A combination. Placarded hazmat needs a CDL at any weight. Dense and light freight
| Freight | Runs out of | Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Beverages, canned goods | Weight | Often heavy pallets |
| Tile, stone, paper | Weight | Very dense |
| Furniture, mattresses | Space | Height and padding |
| Retail and e-commerce | Space or either | Mixed pallet weights |
| Appliances | Space | Liftgate capacity per piece |
Axle weights
A 26 ft box's rear axle carries most of the load. Heavy pallets packed at the back can push the rear axle past its rating even when the total is under GVWR, which also makes steering light. Load heavy pallets toward the front, spread weight evenly side to side, and scale the truck loaded when a load is close to your limit.
Getting weighed
Certified scales at truck stops print a ticket in a few minutes for a small fee. Weigh the truck empty once, set up the way you run it, and keep that ticket as your baseline. When a load is close to your limit, weigh it loaded before you leave the area, and on a scale with separate axle pads if you can, so you see the front and rear axle weights. Many states require trucks over 10,000 lb to stop at open weigh stations, so expect to be weighed on the road too.
Buying for payload
If you're shopping for a 26 ft box truck, compare the empty weight as well as the price. Two trucks with the same 26,000 lb GVWR can differ by a thousand pounds or more of payload because of the chassis, body, liftgate and options. A lighter truck books heavier loads without crossing the line. Ask the seller for a scale ticket, or weigh the truck before you buy.
Refrigerated boxes
An insulated box and a refrigeration unit add significant weight, so a reefer 26 ft truck usually has less payload than a dry one with the same GVWR. Reefer freight like produce, dairy and beverages is often dense, so check weight before every load, not just pallet count.
What it means for loads and pay
Brokers post box truck loads with a pallet count and a weight. The weight usually decides. Dense freight like beverages, tile, paper and metal parts hits your payload with floor space to spare; light freight like furniture, packaging and retail goods fills the box first. Knowing your payload lets you answer quickly and pass on loads that would put you over. Dimensions are in 26 ft box truck dimensions, and load types in box truck loads. Starting out? Dispatch built on your payload
With box truck dispatch, your payload and pallet positions are the filter for every load. You approve every load before it's booked, and the broker sends the rate confirmation straight to you.
Questions people ask
Q01How much weight can a 26 ft box truck carry?
Common non-CDL 26 ft trucks carry up to about 10,000 lb of payload. Your truck's exact number is its GVWR minus its weight empty with fuel, driver and gear; a scale ticket gives the real figure.
Q02Does a liftgate reduce payload?
Yes. A liftgate adds weight to the empty truck, so it comes straight out of payload. Weigh the truck with the liftgate installed to know your real capacity.
Q03When does a 26 ft box truck need a CDL?
When its GVWR is 26,001 lb or more, it's a Class B vehicle under federal rules. At 26,000 lb or less, no CDL is needed unless you haul placarded hazmat or tow a heavy trailer.
Q04What is a 26 ft box truck's GVWR?
Many are built right at 26,000 lb or just under, so they can be driven without a CDL. Some are built heavier. The certification label in the door jamb shows the exact rating.
Q05Does a CDL-B box truck carry more?
Usually, yes. Box trucks rated over 26,000 lb GVWR, which need a Class B CDL, typically have heavier chassis and more payload. The trade-off is the CDL and the DOT drug and alcohol testing program for the driver.
Q06Can I load a box truck over its GVWR?
No. Running over GVWR is illegal and unsafe, and on a truck rated near 26,000 lb, being heavier can also put you over the CDL line for that trip.
